Outspoken anti-coup leftist academic Giles Ungpakorn is back from the UK. Did he meet Thaksin? He shared with Prachatai information about his visit, and opinions about Thailand’s politics and people’s movements.

Why did you go to the UK? To see Thaksin?

เพื่อให้ข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับกรณีการตั้งกระทู้ในเว็บบอร์ดประชาไท ซึ่งนายชนาภัทร ณ นคร หรือที่รู้จักกันในนาม ‘เตมูจิน’ เป็นผู้ฟ้องร้องต่อกองบังคับการปราบปราม สำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติ ว่าอาจจะเข้าข่ายหมิ่นพระบรมเดชานุภาพ และเมื่อวันที่ 18 ต.ค. ที่ผ่านมา นายประจิณ เข้าให้ปากคำกับ พ.ต.ท.อภิชน เจริญผล พนักงานสอบสวน กองบังคับการปราบปราม โดยระบุว่า รับทราบว่า มีข้อความในกระทู้เรื่อง สถาบันกษัตริย์ส่งเสริมหรือเป็นอุปสรรคต่อประชาธิปไตย โพสต์เมื่อวันที่ 21 พ.ย. 49 ซึ่งลงชื่อ “ประจิณ ฐานังกรณ์” เป็นผู้โพสต์ และขอกลับไปตรวจสอบข้อเท็จจริงและจะมาพบกับพนักงานสอบสวนอีกครั้ง ในวันพุธที่ 24 ต.ค. เวลา 10.00 น. เนื่องจากว่า ผ่านมานานมากแล้วนั้น

The internet user allegedly involved in a lèse majesté web-board thread posted on Prachatai discussion forum late last year met police for interrogation. He said he did not remember if he posted the comment and now the thread has been deleted.

Prajin had been issued a witness warrant by the police as suspects were ‘unidentified’ at this stage. On Oct 18, he met police and was informed that the web-board topic in question was titled ‘The monarchy upholds or hinders democracy’ and posted in his name on Nov 21, 2006.

Giles Ungpakorn has condemned his colleagues at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Political Science for serving dictatorship and being corrupt.

The outspoken leftist academic and anti-coup activist yesterday publicly lambasted the executives and other lecturers of his faculty for committing ‘policy corruption’ by spending 42.6 million baht of taxpayers’ money on a research project on democracy.
